Frequently Asked Questions

Psychotherapy begins with a recognition that you or a loved one are suffering in some way and would like to find ways to manage your stressor(s) and live a better life. It may also include individuals who are simply looking to increase their self-awareness and how they would like to be in the world.

Psychotherapy involves developing a trusting relationship with a therapist, in a safe therapeutic space so that you can work through the overwhelms of life with the overall goal of improving your mental health, wellness, and quality of life.

There are many different theories for understanding human behavior and psychological conditions that inform the treatment types.
The best method for finding the right treatment for you is to engage in an open and transparent dialogue with your therapist without feeling judged, so that your therapist can determine which treatment type or combination will best address your needs.
Any combination of treatment types can be utilized in individual therapies as well as joint therapies such as couples and family therapy.

You can learn more about our treatment modalities here.

The length of treatment varies from person to person and depends on many variables, (i.e. your goals and history, the specific problems you would like to address, and how ready you are to make the necessary change). You could feel better with your first communication with a therapist if there is a good connection.

At the start of psychotherapy, your therapist will gather background information and together with your input, develop a therapy plan that gives you an idea of treatment length. Research suggests that typically 12-20 sessions, on average, are needed to help achieve most therapy goals. Some therapies can be brief if there is a very specific short-term problem to address, while some therapies can be longer if there are multiple problems or chronic life-long patterns that you are looking to change.

There are many reasons why people are not ready for psychotherapy at any given moment. Let’s take ‘the path of least resistance’ approach and focus on you. If you are ready, we can start with individual therapy focusing on you and your needs. This will help us to become clear on what your goals are. From there we can explore if couples therapy would help you accomplish the goals you have in mind. Often beginning with individual therapy by one or both partners promotes more effective outcomes in couples therapy.

Fees vary depending on the therapist’s qualifications and level of experience. Please see our Fees page here.

Upon request, our practice will provide a Good Faith Estimate to explain how much your medical and mental health care will cost. You can read more about this here.

You can also find out how to get reimbursed through Mentaya here.

We are an Out-of-network clinic; we do not accept insurance. This means we take a direct payment from you at the start of each session which you can then get reimbursed through your insurance. Find out more here.

The tone and intention with how something new is communicated carries a significant impact on how motivated others can become to join you. Recognizing as a family unit that tension and suffering exists is important for various family members to be open to starting therapy. Presenting family therapy as a path to find ways to better connect and communicate with care can help minimize the defensiveness or worry others could feel. During the initial sessions, the therapist will also work through some of this messaging as information is gathered and therapy goals are established.

If you feel your family has unique circumstances related to being an immigrant family living in America, our FamilyWise Program may be beneficial. Click here to learn more.

Finding a good fit between yourself and the therapist you will be working with is important. We offer a free 20-minute phone consultation in which you can speak with a therapist you are interested in working with and decide if you would like to book an appointment with them.

If you are ready to begin therapy right away without any delays, you can also visit our team page and review the profiles of our therapists to decide who might be a good fit and book an appointment.
